Puławy
The former seat of the Czartoryski Family, a forge of patriotic ideas and an intellectual center. Now the city is famous for magnificent English park. In the Gothic House and the Temple of the Sibyl there is still a museum, founded in 1802 by Izabela Czartoryska. Once it had a wonderful collection of works of art, now it is also a gallery of paintings and memorabilia of the Czartoryski Family.
Czartoryski Palace – the first residence in Puławy (1676-1679) was built by Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski according to the design of Tylman of Gameren. From that time, a typical Baroque viewing axis remained, running along the Royal Avenue with a quadruple row of linden trees. The Czartoryskis, the new owners, hired a local architect, Christian P. Aigner, to rebuild the palace according to enlightenment taste.
A classicist building with restrained architecture is located between the courtyard and the garden. To this day, some of the interiors have survived: a hall, a stone hall and a gothic and knight’s hall. Since the emigration of the Czartoryskis after the November Uprising, the residence has served scientific institutions.
