Święta Lipka
This small town is famous for its Mary Sanctuary. The Church and monastery of the Jesuits are also one of the most valuable baroque complexes in Poland. According the legend, the statue of the Virgin Mary was placed on the lime tree by a convict as a vote an acquittal.
Soon this place began to be famous for its miracles.
The sanctuary area is entered through an ornate baroque gate from the first half of the eighteenth century. The magnificent baroque façade of the church has two high towers, on which clocks from 1740 are placed. In the niches stand statues of the Virgin Mary, Saints Peter and Paul and saints associated with the Jesuit Order, to which King Sigismund III Vasa donated the area.
On the roof of the cloisters surrounding the courtyard there are several dozen figures of prophets from the Old Testament.
Inside you can see gilded pillars and balustrades and colorful eighteenth-century polychrome. In the majestic main altar from 1714 was placed a painting of the Virgin Mary in a silver T-shirt. It is a copy of the image of Our Lady of the Snows from the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore from Rome, made by Bartholomew Pensa. On the sides of the altar there are figures of saints, above are painted scenes from the life of Mary. The pulpit from the beginning of the eighteenth century is decorated with scenes referring to the Holy Scriptures.
Opposite the pulpit, in the place where the “holy linden” used to grow, you can see the trunk of a linden tree with a silver figure of the Virgin Mary.
The biggest attraction is the baroque organ from 1721 with moving figurines, made by J. Mesengel from Königsberg.
